Congresswoman Elaine Luria represents Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, anchored by Virginia Beach, and now includes the entire Eastern Shore, Suffolk, Isle of Wight, Franklin City, and portions of Chesapeake and Southampton. Elaine attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served for 20 years. She was deployed six times to the Middle East and Western Pacific as a nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer who commanded a combat-ready unit of 400 sailors at the end of her naval career. Elaine was one of the first women in the Navy’s nuclear power program and among the first women to serve the entirety of her career on combatant ships. Of all members in the House Democratic Caucus, she served the longest on active duty.
When she retired from the Navy she decided to run for office to keep serving her country and community. She took on an entrenched GOP incumbent and flipped this seat from red to blue in 2018. In Congress, Elaine is the Vice Chair of the House Armed Services Committee where she also serves on the Seapower and Projection Forces and Readiness Subcommittees. She also serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee where she chairs the Disability and Memorial Assistance Subcommittee. Additionally, she volunteered for a third committee-- Homeland Security-- where she is focused on issues of domestic terrorism, including concerns related to the events of January 6th. Recently, Elaine was appointed by Speaker Pelosi to the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.
